Jazz Academy Summer Jazz Camp

The Summer Jazz Camp at the Shedd is a two-week camp. This year we will have two
Big Bands.  Along with the Big Bands we will also have students play in smaller
combos to work on Improvisation. Students will have classes, rehearsals, and workshops
every day taught by well-known local musicians as well as workshops by Ken Peplowski
and other visiting musicians. We will have classes in Improvisation, playing Jazz
Melodies, Jazz Skills, and students will gain a perspective of Jazz through listening.
During the two weeks students will also attend two afternoon concerts, two evening
concerts and both musicals (Oklahoma and A Connecticut Yankee).

Classes will be
Monday thru Friday from 9:00am to 3:15. There will also be student performances on
both Saturdays and Sundays.

The camp runs from Monday July 27th through Sunday August 9th. The camp costs $400
per student if paid by June 30th. That is only $28 a day for the fourteen days.
That is less than the cost for a single hour private lesson for an entire day of classes.

Financial Aid: Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, limited financial aid is
available to students who could not otherwise afford to participate in the Academy.
Our
application process is confidential. Please don’t hesitate to apply.
We want all students to
share in this fabulous experience.
Contact the Shedd Registrar for an application. (687-

If you have any questions about the camp please call Glenn at 345-7308.

Here are the classes we will have for the camp.

Jazz Academy Summer Jazz Camp 2009
The overall approach of the Jazz Academy and the Summer Jazz Camp is to introduce
students to melodic playing and improvisation on the wealth of American Jazz Standards through
the study of and the performance of these classic songs in swing and latin styles.
Here is a list of the classes offered during the two week summer camp.

Warm-ups and Skills Class
Everyday will begin with warm-ups in various keys and focusing on different jazz and blues
patterns. These will be exercises that students can use all year long to hone their personal skills.
These next 3 daily classes work in conjunction with each other.

Melodies Class
We will focus on interpreting standard melodies in the jazz style. We will work on different
songs each day.

Listening Class
Each day we will listen to famous renditions of the songs from our melodies class.

Improvisation Class
During Improvisation Class we will discuss and study the harmonic framework of
the songs from the earlier Melodies class.

Transcribing Solos
We will have a one-time class on the procedure to transcribe jazz solos from recordings.

Listening to Transcribed Solos
In this class students will look and listen to several transcribed jazz solos.

Big Band Class
We will have 2 Big Bands during the camp. One will be for grades 7-9 and the second will be for
grades 10 – 12. Big Bands will rehearse every day and play a concert each weekend. These
bands will focus on swing music and standards. Directors will work on intonation, playing in a
jazz style, ensemble playing and dynamics with the ensembles.

Combos Class
Students will participate in smaller jazz combos to work on improvisation. Students who are too
shy or feel they are not ready will not be forced to improvise during combo performances. These
combos will focus on the performance of jazz standards.

Combo Forum Class
On the first Friday we will have a class where combos will perform for each other and students
will discuss the performances of each combo with constructive criticism.

Piano Voicings for non-pianist
This will be an introduction to jazz piano voicings for non-pianists.

Piano Lab
This class will give students the opportunity to try out their new piano voicings.

Drumming for non-Drummers
We like every student to learn the basics of drumming and have the chance to sit down and try
playing the drum set.

Percussion Class
This is a fun class where we will play with some traditional latin percussion instruments.

Instrumental Workshops with JC Faculty
Students will attend instrumental workshops given by the jazz camp faculty.

Big Band Sectionals
We will have sectionals for each section of the Big Bands to work on fine tuning the ensembles.

Faculty Trio Performance
In this class the Faculty Trio will perform for the students then give students the opportunity to
sit-in and perform with their teachers.
